Maldives Dive Package From Singapore: A Long Weekend On Dhigurah With Boutique Beach

Why Singapore-based divers have the easiest run to South Ari

Most of the dive world treats the Maldives as the long, expensive, once-in-a-lifetime trip. From Singapore it is none of those things. Singapore Airlines flies nonstop from Changi to Malé in under five hours outbound, so you arrive on the same calendar day you left, on one airline, without changing planes. For a diver based in Singapore who is used to weekending in Tioman or flying to Anilao and Komodo, the Maldives sits one direct flight away, in the same comfortable reach as the regional trips, with whale sharks and reef mantas on the other end of it.

That last part is the bit travel booking sites and airlines cannot sell you, because they are not on the island. We are. Boutique Beach is on Dhigurah, within the South Ari Marine Protected Area, and South Ari Atoll is the only atoll in the Maldives with year-round access to both whale sharks and manta rays. You are not booking a beach with a dive desk bolted on. You are booking a hotel that was designed and managed by divers, for divers, the way a liveaboard is, except it stays still and you sleep in a hand-made bed on land.

Getting there: Changi to Dhigurah, the real route

The journey from Singapore runs in two legs.

• Singapore (Changi) to Malé (Velana International). Singapore Airlines runs the route nonstop. You land at Velana, clear a visa on arrival valid for thirty days, and you are in the Maldives without changing planes.
• Velana to Dhigurah. Dhigurah sits 96.8 km from Malé, twenty to thirty minutes by air. There are three ways across. The domestic flight goes Malé to Maamigili airport, then fifteen minutes by boat to Dhigurah. The seaplane drops you at the South Ari platform, then ten minutes by speedboat. The public speedboat ferry runs direct in around two hours, twice a day. All week.

We collect your full flight details at least four days before you arrive so the transfer seats are held, and all transfers are paid at the hotel on arrival. How many days you actually need

A week or a long weekend is the honest answer for a diver coming from Singapore. You are in the water the day after you land, so a long weekend buys you three days of full diving, on the same leave you would put toward Tioman or Anilao.

A typical long weekend with us: fly Changi to Malé and transfer in on day one, dive three days, then transfer back and fly home. Most certified divers do two or three dives a day. In the northeast monsoon, December to April, the whale sharks sit further west in the atoll, so the boat runs a full day to reach them. On those days the chefs send breakfast and lunch out on the boat so you are not racing back for meals. The channel next to Dhigurah holds fifteen thilas (the deep coral pinnacles the captains navigate without GPS), with famous sites like Kudarah Thila, Five Rocks and Broken Rock about ten minutes from the harbour, and more than fifty dive sites reachable across South Ari. There is enough water here for a fortnight; a long weekend is the minimum that justifies the flight, and from Singapore the flight is short enough that a long weekend makes sense.

July and August: the value window, not the off-season

Singapore divers planning around July and August are arriving in the southwest monsoon, May to November, and this is the part the brochures get backwards. The Maldives stays warm all year, 28 to 30 degrees in the water; what changes between seasons is the wind direction, not the temperature.

In the southwest monsoon the whale sharks range along the stretch from Dhigurah to Maamigili, which is the water right on our doorstep. That means shorter boat trips and more diving close to home. The plankton that draws them in also brings the mantas, so July and August are a genuinely strong window for the big animals, and our room rates are lower in the low season than in the peak. It is the value run of the year for divers who care more about what is in the water than about which month the influencers are posting. What is in the all-inclusive, and who Dhigurah suits

The all-inclusive at Boutique Beach covers your diving, your meals and your drinks under one booking. Two or three dives a day, tanks, weights, guide and boat charges, a personal surface marker buoy for your stay, mask, fins and snorkel, all meals across the BB Cafe and the rooftop BB Heaven, unlimited soft drinks, water, fresh juices, tea and coffee, and WiFi throughout. This is a PADI 5 Star centre with six PADI instructors and small groups, no more than four or five divers to an instructor. It suits divers, couples and families who want the diving to be the point. Dhigurah is a local island, not a private resort, so Islamic customs apply and there is no alcohol served on the island, though guests who want a drink can visit a nearby resort about ten minutes away. If you came for a swim-up bar and a kids’ club, this is the wrong island and we would rather say so now.
