Sustainable choices – We try to limit our plastic use in particular.
With the Environment in mind
Our Island Dhigurah
Plastic
Dhigurah is one of few local islands who have signed up to an initiative with Parley who are a conservation group who are introducing projects deigned to protect our oceans. The island collects any plastic that may have landed on our beach every week and it is then safely sent away to be made into Adidas Ultraboost trainers.
Rubbish Recycling
Dhigurah is an island interested in protecting our environment! Each morning the Council collect waste food from all the houses and hotels and turn it into fantastic compost which can be used on our island and is also sold to other islands.
In the afternoon each day, all the other waste is collected and sorted into items which can be recycled and these are sent to Male each week. Only what’s left is burnt. All the villagers and guest houses pay for this service because they care about our environment and most importantly, our oceans.
Boutique Beach
We try to limit our plastic use in particular. We use glass straws only, we use ceramic pots in our bathrooms for toiletries, we have a water tank in our cafe for guests and staff to refill their own or provided reusable water bottles.
We regularly hold or take part in beach and island clean ups. We printed and distributed reusable cotton carrier bags to each family in our village to reduce carrier bag use and each of our rooms have beach bags for you use during your stay.
We support our Council, our schools, our medical centre and our Mosque as well as local events and local initiatives.
Marine Protected Area - SAMPA
Discover unforgettable underwater encounters near Dhigurah Island, where Boutique Beach is ideally located within the South Ari Marine Protected Area (SAMPA). Here, whale sharks and manta rays can be seen year-round ….whether you’re diving or snorkelling. Marvel at graceful manta rays feeding in Dhigurah Lagoon also we have several nearby cleaning stations that are a haven for these majestic creatures. In addition, the marine protected area is home to magnificent whale sharks, offering an exceptional experience for every underwater adventurer.
In the Maldives, all sharks are protected by law, ensuring that these magnificent creatures continue to thrive in their natural habitat for generations to come. Join us and explore a marine environment where conservation meets the breathtaking beauty of reef sharks.
SAMPA in the Maldives is 42 square kilometres (16 square miles). It’s the largest protected area in the Maldives.
SAMPA is the largest protected area in the Maldives representing one of the world’s most significant sites for whale sharks. Whale sharks in SAMPA are present all year round, and to date, more than 726 individual whale sharks have been sighted within SAMPA with more than 8000 encounters, with many returning frequently to the area (Big Fish Network. 2024). Most sightings in the areas are male juveniles (72.5%) male sex bias. This makes it probable that this area has the highest repeat encounter rate of individual whale sharks in the world. SAMPA is likely a ‘secondary nursery’ location for whale sharks which have grown above the juvenile period. In addition, whale sharks in this region are not seen again once they grow beyond 8m (and so corresponding to sexual maturity). It therefore appears SAMPA offers a critical habitat in this post-juvenile, pre-mature stage.
Awareness
Our Commitment to a Greener Future
At Boutique Beach all-inclusive dive hotel, we believe in celebrating and safeguarding the natural beauty of our surroundings. We are dedicated to environmental awareness and active participation in sustainability initiatives that protect both our local ecosystem and the wider oceanic environment.
Island Initiatives on Dhigurah Plastic Reduction – Dhigurah stands out as a beacon of environmental responsibility. By partnering with Parley for the Oceans, our island plays a key role in transforming plastic waste into innovative products—like Adidas Ultra-boost trainers. Every week, any plastic waste found on our beach is collected and responsibly processed, showcasing our commitment to reducing plastic pollution.
Waste Recycling and Composting – Environmental care is woven into daily life on Dhigurah. Each morning, the local Council gathers excess food from residences and hotels to create nutrient-rich compost. This eco-friendly compost not only nourishes local gardens but is also shared with neighbouring islands. Later in the day, non-food waste is sorted for recycling and safely transported to Male, ensuring minimal waste is incinerated. This collective effort reflects the deep-rooted environmental awareness shared by the entire community.
Boutique Beach Sustainability
At Boutique Beach, we embrace sustainable practices every day. We minimise plastic use by serving drinks with glass straws, providing ceramic containers for toiletries, and encouraging guests to refill their water bottles from our dedicated water station. Our involvement in regular beach and island clean-ups, along with distributing reusable cotton bags and offering beach bags for guest use, reinforces our dedication to reducing waste and protecting the ocean.
Celebrating Marine Conservation in SAMPA
Our hotel is perfectly situated within the South Ari Marine Protected Area (SAMPA), a sanctuary for some of the ocean’s most magnificent creatures. Here, environmental awareness comes to life as guests witness year-round sightings of whale sharks, manta rays, and other marine life. SAMPA is celebrated as one of the world’s premier sites for whale shark encounters, hosting hundreds of these gentle giants in a protected and thriving habitat.
Shark protection
All sharks in the Maldives enjoy legal protection, underscoring our commitment to marine conservation. SAMPA’s 42 square kilometres serve as a critical habitat for juvenile and post-juvenile whale sharks, making it a vital area for both conservation efforts and unforgettable underwater experiences.
