Manta Mobula - Our Dive Boat

In 2021 we decided to build our own dive boat.

Up until 2020 we had hired various boats from another island nearby but we always wanted the money to come to our island to aid the economy on Dhigurah. Afzal’s Father agreed to fund the building of the boat in exchange for a monthly rent over 20 years.

Ibrahim, our Captain travelled to Raa Atoll in the north of Maldives to buy a wooden hull from an island who specialise in building them. He towed the hull for 2 days to bring it back to Dhigurah boat yard.

Many people from the village came together on a Friday, when there is a holiday, to help pull the boat up the beach into the yard. They used traditional methods of logs and a winch to haul the boat up the beach. It was surprisingly quick, only an hour!

Dhigurah people often work like this to help friends deal with big projects especially boats. It is one of the strengths of this island where people are willing to give their time to help others!

From June 21 to Dec 21 a team of workers who specialise in fibre glass, worked to wrap the entire hull in fibre glass over the wood… this should provide many many years of protection to the wooden hull.

The design of the boat came from a previous boat we had hired but gave up because it was too small. This new boat was 55’ long and very wide so divers wearing fins had plenty of room before the tank rack in front of them. The fibreglass guys then built the deck and up to the sunroof giving an engine area below deck and ample seating and spaces above each diver for towels and dry gear.

The engine came from Sri Lanka but came late due to covid and strikes at the port in Sri Lanka but eventually it arrived and Ibby and and some local guys helped winch the very heavy engine into the space under deck at the back of the boat.

When the boat structure was finished, again we asked the village for help launching her into the water. Many many people came again to help!

It was now MUCH heavier than before and took 2 and a 1/2 hours to roll down the beach and into the water.

Then the boat was ready for its first run and our Captains drove it across Dhigurah lagoon to the harbour at pace! It was a very exciting!
Once inside the harbour some electrical works and sea worthy certification had to be completed before on 1st Jan 2022 when our guests had their first adventure on Manta Mobula our new boat!

Both guests and staff were VERY excited to see the boat sail out of the harbour for the first time completed! Time to Manta Point was cut by an hour and now we could travel further to visit good dive sites much faster than before!

Dive Compressor

Safety is our top priority. We service all our compressors and cylinders strictly according to regulations and work with trusted suppliers to ensure that even the smallest issues are promptly addressed.

In 2024, we upgraded our dive centre with the installation of our current Bauer/Rainer system. This system features two 250 Bauer Compressors and a Rainer membrane Nitrox setup with eight filling nozzles, which fill cylinders at a controlled pace to reduce heat and minimise condensation.
Every Nitrox cylinder is analysed during filling, and our instructors, reviews your cylinder % with you before each dive.

All tanks are filled in-house with vigilant monitoring to guarantee the highest quality air and Nitrox. We are proud to be Bauer Pure Air Certified (link here)—a standard we have maintained throughout our operations.
